Welcome to the web site of Rampant Loon Press,
a very small and unabashedly midwestern publishing house dedicated to the seemingly radical idea
that if we produce high-quality books, conduct our business dealings in
an open and ethical manner, and treat people as we ourselves would wish to be treated,
then it just might be possible to create a successful new book business without
begging for grant money, kissing up to corporate sponsors, maneuvering for tax breaks,
or publishing books we would be ashamed to have our children or parents read.
Much as we prefer to remain positive, it may help at the outset to define what we are not. We are not a subsidy house. We are not a vanity press. We are not a print-on-demand publisher, or the house press of any church, political party, advocacy group, or non-profit corporation. Rather, we are just what we claim to be: a small, for-profit business, dedicated to producing the sorts of books the major publishing conglomerates have long-since decided are not worth pursuing. The titles of regional interest, the slow-starters and small-sellers, the books that if they were ever to find themselves on the New York Times bestseller list might glance around nervously and wonder how the heck they were ever going to make it back to the Midwest alive — these are the books you will find on the Rampant Loon release list. So think of us as being something like the St. Paul Saints of book publishing: a great place for new writers to launch their careers, a comfortable place for mature writers to stay in print after they've been cut by the majors, and an even better place for readers to discover the sorts of great, small-market books that the big companies can no longer be bothered to publish. And never mind the messy web site or the broken links; we're still remodeling the place, doncha know. |
